Learn More: Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are naturally purified proteins that can be used for various therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. You may recognize popular neuromodulator brand names such as Dysport®, BOTOX® and XEOMIN®.

Neuromodulators prevent the body’s release of acetylcholine from the presynaptic nerve terminals, limiting muscle contractions.

Our clinic uses Neuromodulators for therapeutic treatment of chronic migraines, hyperhidrosis and bruxism.

Our clinic uses Neuromodulators to reduce the look of forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, lower face, gummy smile etc.

Neuromodulators start to take effect in as little as two days with full effect two weeks after treatment. It’s important to book a follow-up appointment after two weeks to view effectiveness with your health team. Neuromodulators last on average three months.

Side effects are rare but include the following:

  • Headache
  • Eyelid Droping (Ptosis)
  • Bruising
  • Browdrop
  • Pain
  • Pruritis
  • Diplopia
  • Dry Eyes
  • Allergic Reaction

Please inform our office of ALL medications you are on and if the following apply as Neuromodulators may not be appropriate for you:

  • Neuromuscular Disorders )i.e. Myasthenia Gravis)
  • Bleeding Disorders (i.e. hemophilia)
  • Taking Aminoglycosides
  • Taking Blood Thinners
  • Keloid Scarring
  • Breathing Disorders
  • Auto-immune Disorders

If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic to cow’s milk or have an infection in the treatment area, Neuromodulators should NOT be used.

At Opal Medical Clinic & Aesthetics, we strive to ensure that your experience is comfortable, informative, and tailored to meet your aesthetic goals. Here’s what you can expect during your neuromodulator appointment:

Before the Procedure:

  • Consultation: Your appointment will start with a consultation where your practitioner will discuss your aesthetic goals, review your medical history, and explain the procedure, including potential results and side effects.
  • Facial Analysis: Your practitioner will examine the areas of your face you wish to treat to determine the appropriate injection sites and dosage.
  • Preparation: The targeted area will be cleansed, and a topical anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort.

During the Procedure:

  • Injection: Using a fine needle, the neuromodulator (such as Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin) will be injected into the predetermined sites. The process is quick, typically taking only a few minutes.
  • Minimal Discomfort: Most clients report only a slight pinch during injections. The procedure is generally well-tolerated without the need for pain relief.

After the Procedure:

  • Immediate Aftercare: You’ll receive specific instructions for post-treatment care. Typically, you can resume normal activities immediately but may be advised to avoid strenuous activities for a short period.
  • Observation: Minor redness or swelling at the injection sites is normal and usually subsides within a few hours.

To ensure the best possible results from your neuromodulator treatment, please follow these aftercare instructions:

  1. Avoid Touching the Treated Area: For at least 4 hours after treatment, avoid massaging or applying pressure to the treated areas to prevent spreading the neuromodulator to unintended muscles.

  2. Remain Upright: Try to stay upright for 4 hours post-treatment. Avoid bending over or lying down to ensure the neuromodulator stays in the intended area.

  3. Skip the Gym: Avoid strenuous physical activities and exercises for at least 24 hours after your treatment to minimize swelling and prevent the neuromodulator from migrating.

  4. Avoid Heat Exposure: For the first 24 hours, stay away from hot environments like saunas, hot showers, or sunbathing, as heat can increase swelling and bruising.

  5. Stay Cool: Applying a cool compress to the treated area can help reduce any swelling or discomfort.

  6. Skip Certain Medications: Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements, like aspirin or fish oil, for a few days unless prescribed by your doctor, to reduce the risk of bruising.

  7. Follow Up: Results typically appear within a few days but can take up to two weeks for the full effect. A follow-up appointment may be recommended to assess the results and make any necessary adjustments.

Remember, individual experiences and recovery can vary. If you have any questions or concerns following your treatment, or if you experience any unusual symptoms, please contact our clinic immediately. Your health and satisfaction are our top priorities.
